The Energy of the Elora Handmade Market

A crowd of shopper's milled about the neatly stocked tables at the Elora Handmade Market on a brisk Sunday in late October - browsing handmade jewellery, wall art, clothing and more. It was the first show of its kind in the village, but one of many similar markets popping up in larger cities.

Named for their tendency to appear, draw crowds and disappear quickly, 'pop-up' handmade markets are not a new concept, but have risen in popularity over the past few years. These one-day shopping experiences are planned and set up in an available space - often outside, in parking lots and in our case - a barn!

Handmade markets, like the one we hosted in Elora, have created a really exciting concept for shoppers - the merchandise is fleeting and one-of-a-kind, the location is unique and it creates a certain kind of 'buzz' floating through the air.

The Elora Handmade Market had an energy, one you would never find in a mall. The market atmosphere allowed shoppers meet the makers and learn about the person behind the brand.

In addition to being a fun place for shoppers, the Elora Handmade Market was a great environment for local creatives to mingle and network. Vendors for the market were not only selected for their goods - they were selected for their story. The 'Why' and the 'How' were also part of the vendor selection process.

This creates a culture. One that is more than just another market or typical 'craft sale' to sell your merchandise. A culture of encouragement - the community supporting handmade artisans, makers supporting makers and we hope, one which inspires new makers.

The plans for the next Elora Handmade Market have begun. We hope you have the opportunity to experience the energy and support your local makers.

Cheers,

Mandy
